At Friday's meeting: of .tho Talerl County Council tho inspector of slaughterhouses (Sir John Smith) submitted tho following report on the pollution of the ; Kaikoral stream:— In accordance with your instructions, I hftvo to submit tha following' report on tho pollution of the haikorai Bfioain. In no doing I have thcHjtht it advisable to include woiks Bltuated on tmall trlbutailea of tho main stream, and have therefore olasscd tho report under two heads-vlz., works on tributaries and woiks on the main B'.tcam, WORKS ON TRIBUTARIES. /„, h Dlxon and Co -' taasago-Bkla preraiorß (Roslyn borough).—This work is carrlod on cloao to a small creek corninu; frcm Flagstall Hill, and emptying into tho Kaikorai below the washpool sully. Tho offal from intestines is allowed to cscapo or la thrown into tho crcok. iho nuisance is therefore obvlcm. 2. Blackwooa's Blaughteryart's, Roß'.yn.—A Bmall oreok, a'so from Flagstaff, passes through theao yarda, and before joining the main stream receives the blood. 3. Hall's eoapworlts at Burrsldo.—Any matter emptied into the small creek at these works must pollute the Kaikorai etieam. i. Fellmoogery near flourmills at Burnslde.—The relueo Hme-w.Bh, &c. f: om ibis lellmongery Is curled by a email creek Into the Kaikorai Blrcam, 6. Driver and Cos. soapworks.—These works are situated on a email creek. As regards tho pollution ol the stream they are in the same position as Hall'd works mentioned abovo. WORKS ON KAIKOIUI MAIS STREAM. 1. SmUhV,(UtyCompany) slaughtoryards, Eoslyn.— Blood and oilai from those yards at prosont fluda its way into tho main Etream. 2. Lambert's fellmongery, Kcßlyn.—This pollution is a bad one, consisting as in does of waih from Jolt-pita and particles or wool. 3. iioEglel Company's Woollen Mills, in the Kalkctal Valley, merely have tho exhaußt Bteam pipe turned over the stream. There is no pollution, i. Dureton's ojt and bone works, Hoslyn.-Ko solid matter 1b allowed to escape at the works, bus the liquid from the tallow digesters is conveyed Into the stream . 6 Roslyn Woollen Mills —Tho waste dye products aro conveyed into tho strosm, and in addition tho owners cf thesa mills carry on a fcllmongery, and tho report on lambort's follmongcry will also apply in this case. 0. Patrick's slaughteryards, Hornington.—All blood from these yards is conveyed into tho main stream. 7. Mr Early washes wool at Barrt, consequently the pollution is obvious. 8. Hew Zsaland Drug Company, Burnsldo.—No Eolld matter is allowed to etenpe, but the Etream is polluted by digester liquid and various chemical wattes. 9 Now Zealand Befrlgorating Works, Bura»ido.— Blosd ftom the works is carried into tho stream. Ihe solid part of the refuse is treated with quicklime, and the liquid ia applied to the land by means of a watercart. 11. Marks' tannery.—Waste liquor from tho tan-pits is conveyed into the stream. Tho foregoing aro all tho works slluatod on tho Kaikorai etream and tributaries from its source to the township of Green Island. I would point out to ttto Council that I consider the fcllmongers' refuse, tho dye refuse, and, the digoster and chemical refuse aro the worst causes of pollution in tho stream, and in confirmation of my opinion I may mention that trout exist above tho foUmongcricj—none below.j Writing at a later dato in connection with the refrigerating work;, the inspector Gtated that tho bulk of the blood was removed daily with tha oflal. It was only the blood waßhedoS the floors that found its way into (he stream. Cr Snow asked what power (he Council had to deal with the matter. Cr Robkrts did nol think they had any power. C; Charters eaid the companies mentioned were flmply inure for their own good. The Council had no power at all. Cr Thomson suggested that they Bhculd writs to their solicitors and ascortain what powur they had; or perhaps it would bo tho boat plan to forward the report to the deputation tbat had waited on tho Council from the tircen Islam! borough. Tcey would easily see that the Council had no power to deal with tha cases, unless they shut up the places altogether, and that would be a very undesirable thing to do. Cr Roberts : We might ask them to point out how wo can act. I Ece that at Sanuo.-.'s thcro Is no pollution. This was one cf tho greatest objections tho deputation had. Iho report with lojard to that la very satisfactory. It was resolved to forward the report to tho Green Island Borough Council.
