SOUTH DUNEDIN.

The quarterly meeting of the South Dunedin Licensing Committee was held at noon yesterday. Present—Messrs Wardrop, Baird, Ings, FeltLmm, and Stokes. On the motion of Mr Baird, seconded by Mr Inga, Mr Wardrop waa appointed chairman.

The police report was read, and considered to be satisfactory. The Chairman intimated that the Committee had agreed to use their exertions individually to put down illegal trading, They know that infringements of the law took place which the police were unable to cope with. Some discussion took place as to whether the Committee could vote a reward for the detection of illegal trading, and on the motion of Mr Feltham, seconded by Mr Ings, the Chairman was authorised to get legal advice on the point. Mr Feltham, in moving a vote of thanks to the police, said that they deserved every credit for the manner in which they had done their duty. His experience was that when charges were brought before the Court the police were thwarted by the Magistrates siding with the publicans, and he was of opinion that there should be either an alteration in the law or a change in its administration, I Sergeant Macdonell returned thanks for the vote, and referred to the difficulties which the police laboured under through the opposite sympathies of different committoes, ' PORT CHALMERS. The Licensing Committee for Port Chalmers met yesterday. There were present—Messrs J. Brysdale (chairman), G. F. Dodds, W. M, Innes, J, Mill, and J. Cable. EXTENSION OF HOURS. Edward R. Boltou applied for an extension I of his license for the Provincial Hotel from 10 p.m. to 12 p.m. The Chairman aßked if tho police had any objection tooffor. Sergeant Hanlon stated he had not the slightest objection to the character of either Mr Bolton or any of tho other applicants, who were all very ro3pectable men, but he did not consider, as chief of the police force in the Port, or in his capacity as an inspector under the Licensing Act, that it would beneficial to the general public for the Committee to grant the extepsion applied for. During the last 20 months he had not received a single complaint from any person in the Port that they . could not get accommodated after 10 o'clock at night; indeed it was well known that the houses were kept open after 10 o'clock and on Sundays. At the annual meeting the police would make objections to some of the houses, which were wooden buildings, and he ■ considered some of them unsuitable as hotels.

The Chairman remarkod that the Bench had determined not to grant any licenses after 11 o'clock. The application would therefore be refused, and a license for 11 o'clock be granted. Similar extensions were- granted to Ellen Chick for Chick'B Hotel; John Cooper, Commercial Hotel; William Sachtler, Royal Hotel; John Hay, Railway Hotel; John Thompson, Marine Hotel; William 3. Waters, Port Chalmers Hotel; Jarceg Morkane, George Hotel, SUNDAY TBADINQ. The Chairman stated the Bench had determined to go aB far as the Act would allow them in suppressing Sunday trading, and if the police, succeeded in proving a case of the kind, the Bench would deal with it with the | utmost rigour. This terminated the proceedings.
