CITY POLICE COURT.

Tuesday, March 3, (Before his Worship the Mayor and Mr H, Gourley, J.P.) Drunkenness.—Five offenders were convicted and fined, I Assault, &c.—Jane Brown was charged with ansault and breaking crockery in a house in Walker street.—On the charge of assault she was found guilty, and sentenced to seven dayß' imprisonment, with hard labour. The second I charge was dismissed.—She was further charged by the police with having insufficient lawful means of support. On this charge she was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, with hard labour.

Alleged Breach of the Licensing Act. — Patrick Daly was charged with a breach ot the Licensing Act in selling brandy on Sunday, the 22nd February.—Mr Solomon appeared for defendant.—Conßtable Jamea Dale stated in evidence that on Sunday, 22nd February, he saw a woman go into the defendant's hotel (the National) in King street, and when she came out be saw a flask sticking out of her pocket. He took it from her, tasted it, and found it to be brandy. He returned the flaßk to the woman, and going into the hotel accused defendant of having sold the brandy, but he denied it. —Mrs Hannah Cunningham, who said that she lived in Chalmers place, near the National Hotel, stated in evidence that the defendant'invited her to his house on the 22nd February, on the occasion of the christening of his baby. When leaving he gave her a flask of liquor to carry home with her to the "old woman." She did not know what sort of liquor it waß. She didn't pay anything for it; and when the policeman stopped her in the street he did not taste or smell the liquor.—The Bench dismissed the case.—Sergeant-major Beyin said that the information given to the police in the first instance was quite different to the evidence cow given by Sirs Cunningham,
