WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL.

Tho ordinary monthly meeting of the Council was held on Friday, the members present being —Mr James Green (chairman), Crs H. Orbell, ■J. Crickmore, R. Jefferis, and J. Duncan. PETITIONS. A petition from Messrs Julier, Mason, and others at Deborah Bay, concerning necessary repairs to a district road there, was received —Tha Council at last meotiog resolved to' spend £12 on tha road in question, and the petitioners are to bo informed of this. Messrs Maxwell, Hallam. and other settlers Hawksbury, petitioned to have Pry's Hill on the Quarry road, reduced.— Resolved—" That ths Council haviDg already voted what they think sufficient for the work, regret that they cannot at present grant the request of the petitioners." Messrs Maxwell, Hallam, and Henderson appeared as a deputation to support tho petition, but as they arrived lato, the Chairman ruled that the matter could only bo opened up by notice of motion. '■'■'..••■•;.,-•<■ With reference to the report on damage-to' the bridge over the creek on the Mill road, Sawyers' Bay, the Council resolved that tho bridge should be rebuilt at a cost of £150, under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act.' ■.--■ •-•■ -.■•';. Concerning the application of Mr Sinclair to close the road-line near bis property, - the Inspector reported in favour of the road being closed. DEPUTATIONS. Messra C. Gilmore, W. Diack, Pearson, and Hallain appeared as a deputation about the state of the road to the goods-station, Waikouaiti, from Johnston's public-house.—The Council decided that, they could do nothing in the matter at present. accounts. : Accounts were passed for payment amounting to £959 4s 3d—£Go being for work dona on the Wakari-Waitati road, £182 on the Hummockside road, and £458 5s under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act. ' ' CONTRACTS. ' Contracts were let as follow:—Round Hill | road, Merlon riding—T. Hammond; £28: re- | pairs to Glasgow street—W. Russell, £7; and rotten rock, 2s Bd. Letters were :'read from ■ Messrs •Howoith-i and Hodgkins, Dunedin, and John Downes, Blueskin,. complaining of boulders and clay being thrown into, the Waitati stream by a contractor for sections on the Wakari-Waitati road, thus endangering, in case of a flood, the holdings of Mr Downes and other settlers.— The Inspector reported that if ifc is necessary to keep all the material clear of the river bed a retaining-wall will have to be built, which will be an expensive matter. The stones complained of are to be used in pitching when the -■ formation is ready.—The inspector-was in-" structed to rigidly adhere to the plans furnished by the Public Works Department, and to see that the works are carried on in such a way as to prevent any damage accruing to Mr" ■■ Downes. , ' ■ .

Careyj Evansdale, wrote concern^ mg the danger of his houss catching fire through Mr Roehford being allowed to light wheel-tire fires on a district road opposite his place.—After consideration the Council saw no reason for altering previous decision. • A letter was read from the Inspector of Police, Dunedin, with regard to cattle straying on the various roads and streets in the county. - He doubted if any provision existed; in' law to meet such cases. He would give the matter1 i his best attention.—Received. : ! _ Tha Surveyor-general, Wellington, applied for a report on the work dona for the Govern-"-inent in opening Crown lands for sale by roads ~ during tho year 1884.— Received, and information to be supplied. Messrs Barr.? and Oliver, Dunsdiri, wrote stating that the plan for the road exchange ■ between Barnett and Reid being ready, the Chief Surveyor required the road to bo pegged at air angles. They wished to know if the' Council were prepared to go to the expense.—■-* The clerk was requested to ascertain the expsnse of the pegging referred to. The Troperty Tax Commissioner requested the Council to add to the substituted valuation roll of Crown lands part of section 4G, block ~ Hl'.r. CH ORBELL'S RESIGNATION. ' A" The Chairman regretted that ho was' com- ' polled to bring forward what be would rather not have done—Viz., the resignation of Or Orbell, who had left a note to that effect before ■ the Council went to lunch. The clerk was instructed to inform MiHenderson, a contractor on the Mount Watkins road, thofc the Council could not agree to allow him to reduce the pinch uamed at the rate of lOd par-yard on purpose to get Btuff to make up an embankment.

_ Constable Groves, of Blueskin, was appointed inspector of slaughterhouses in place of Constable Green.

Mr Groves, of Sawyers' Bay, was granted a slauguterhouse license.
