THE LATE MEMBER FOR DUNEDIN CENTRAL.
TO THE EDITOB. Sir,—l was present to-day at the official declaration of the poll, and heard with regret Mr Bracken announce his intention'of leaving Dunedia with the view of taking up. his permanent residence in the North Island. 'Though I was actively opposed to Mr Bracken' in the late contest, my opposition to him was solely on principle, and mainly because_ he had voted with, and was prepared to again vote with, those who are the open enemies of our Educa- ' tion Act. But Mr Bracken has no warmer friend than myself, nor any sincerer admirer of his many personal qualities.. He has, as he fairly stated at the hustings, been an advocate in the Press and; on,the platform.of the rights of labour^ and on .every occasion his services have been freely.placedat the disposal-of?every class and every"denamination, and for'every charitable purpbse.' The friendly soeietfSa'have also to thank Kirn fora great deal;' My object in writing to you is not to enlarge on Mr Bracken's public acts, which in the directions I have in- Idicated Bpeak for themselves; but I should like to see, before he leaves us,'some recognition in a tangible shape of the public services'he has rendered to the city. We have testimonialised very many worse men. I therefore hope that any who can sink political differences in order to do honour to a deserving citizen will join mo in organising a testimonial fund.—l am, &c, ' M. C. July 24.
