CITY POLICE COURT.

Wednesday, Jult 24. * (Before E. H. Carew, Esq., R.M.)

Drunkenness.—For this offence three persons were convicted and discharged. Larceny.—Christina Lawson was charged with stealing from Daniel-Healy on Wednes day evening, at Dunedin, three £1 notes;— The accused pleaded not guilty, and elected to have the caso dealt with summarily.—The facts; ai stated by the complainant, were somewhat ssl follow: On Wednesday, 23rd inst., the complainant had arrived from Timaru,- and mek the accused in Walker street, when they botH went to the latter's house, a place of ill-fame in Miller's right-of-way, and when accused was sitting on complainant's knee he felt her putting his pursa into his pocket. • He looked at the purse, and discovered that £3 which had been in it was abstracted. * The notes were in the purse when he left Timaru, and ou charging the accused with having taken them she denied any knowledge of them, but subsequently, wheD he brought the police, she took them out of her. scarf and let them fall ,on.tha floor. Complainant himself was sober, but accused waa the worse for liquor., Tha arresting constable also gave evidence, as to being called by complainant, who stated that accused had stolen three £1 notes from him and. subsequently given them up again. A previous conviction for larceny had been recorded against the accused.—His Worship said that there was no doubt but that accused had taken complainant's niomy, and sentenced her to one calendar month's imprisonment. His Worship remarked that if there was power to do so the money in such a case should be confiscated. '

_ Neglected Child. — Catherine Norris, a little coloured girl, was charged with being a neglected child.' It appeared that her,father had left the child'with a coloured friend of his named Alfred Brady, who had kept the child for the last three yeara, but had recently been unable to retain it, and therefore wished it to be put into the Industrial School. The father was in Wellington in indigent circumstances, but wished to have the child seat to him.— Communications from the Wellington police on the subject wore submitted to his Worship, who adjourned the case for a fortnight, until something further was known of the parent's intention.
