LAWN-TENNIS MATCH.

A rather interesting lawn-tennis contest was decided on Saturday afternoon, at the Dunedin Club's ground in Cumberland street, between representatives of Auckland and Dnnodin. The attendance was large, antS, included a number of ladies; and the play, disappointing as it was in some respects, was keenly*v watched. Messrs Dargaville and A. M'Don- V aid, M.H.R.'b, were the players for Auckland, and the chosen representatives of Dunedin were Dr Batchelor and Mr H. MacNeil, jun. The match was decided by the best of three sets, six games to a set, but unfortunately the first two sets sufficed to settle the matter in favour of the visitors. The Dunedin players seemed in anything but good form at the commencement, and appeared placed at a disadvantage by the play of their opponents, that of Mr M'Donald especially being very fast and dangerous. However, be the causa v hat it may, the Aucklanders went clean away from, the start, and won the first set by gis games to two. The next was far better contested, the score standing live all, but tha | awkward fact of Auckland being already ona to the good did not tend to steady the Dunedin men'B play at this critical juncture, and the final game went to the Northerners. The third set was played by mutual consent, and in this Dunedin showed up better, winning by six games to four—a result which proves the match to be not, after all, tbe unequal °ne it appeared at the outset. A return match waa arranged for Wednesday next, and will perhaps afford the local players a chance of regaining their laurels. -
