CITY DRAINAGE. TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, —How to dispose of our sewage is a problem which, above all others,should occupy the attention of every citizen who has tha health of either himself or his fellows to consider. I am of the opinion .that the present methods of disposing of sewage are radically wrong. It will always be impossible to main-' tain that degree of healthiness which modern civilisation should entitle us to look for in cities while solid sewage matter is allowed to enter the sewers. Surely some of our engineers could devise a plan by means of which this undesirable state of things might be avoided. I think that if evory house were provided with a tank in which sewage could bo filtered and deodorised, and then removed to drying-furnaces, where it could be dried and press'od into blocks, and- sold to the farmers asmanure, we might hope to make our cities more healthy than they at present aye. ' There would boa gbed doal of expense' in'starting such a scheme and completing it.'biit tha sale of the manuro should be some return for the outlay, and the bonefit to the city in the way of cleanliness and health should quite outweigh all other considerations.. Then clear liquid only would be allowed to flow into the sowers, and with a good water supply it would be an easy matter to keep them clean.
