Auckland, July 27th.

A swamper named Harrison has been missing from Waitoa, Upper Thames, since the 17th. It is supposed he got lost in the swamp, and died from exposure. When he was last seen ho was tho wprse for liquor. At the inquest on Captain Johnston, who committed suicide at Kaglan, a verdict of "Temporary insanity" was returned. Deceased was a nephew of Lord Campbell, and cousin to Sir George Campbell, M.P. for Kirkcaldy. J. M. Shepherd, tho abscondor, was a passenger by tho Itingarooma for Timaru in custody. Tho brigantine Nightingale, which put in here on the passage from Melbourne to Whangarei, had sprung a leak. She will be docked to discover the leak.

A cable has reached here from a firm in Sydney stating that Hargis, the levanter, has at last escaped the hands of justice. Every endeavour to hold him and forward him from Adelaide to Auckland proved fruitless. The Court ordered his discharge from custody under a writ of habeas corpus. _ In a recent cable message his assets were given as £1400 odd, and liabilities £OSS. His liabilities really amounted to £1400, and his assets were £005, found on him when arrested.

Now that Winiata's fate has been definitely settled, it may be stated that he has confessed to several persons having perpetrated the murder of Packer.

At a meeting of the Executive Council, it was decided not to interfere in the carrying out of the sentence of death passed on Winiata for the murder of Packer. The date of execution will be fixed by the sheriff. In Banco, judgment has been given in Costello v. O'Donnell and others. This was a case heard at-the last sitting of the Court of Appeal in the form of a motion for a new trial or to enter judgment for defendant. The action was one for injury done to plaintiff's leasehold property by mining operations being carried on by the defendant and others at Croninville, on Totara Kiver. At the trial, which was held in Wellington in April last, a verdict was found for plaintiff in the sum of £GO. Their Honors discharged the case, with costs. Judgment in the action will therefore stand for the plaintiff. Christohurch, July 27th. A fire to-night destroyed a building in the yard of Lightband, Allan, and Co.'s large boot factory. The loss was confined to the building, which was of no great value, and some £200 worth of stock. The latter was insured. •
