THE TARANAKI HARBOUR WORKS.

(Pbb United Pbess Association.)

New Pltjiodth, August 18th.

A meeting was held at Waitara last evening for the purpose of considering the present state of the harbour question, especially with refer ence to the report of the Parliamentary Committee*, when the following, which was an amendment to a resolution, was carried by four-fifths of those present:—" That the Colony has pledged itself to carrying out the New Plymouth harbour works, and upon the faith of that pledge very many persons have settled and invested in this district, both in the parchase of Crown lands and otherwise, and this meeting is of opinion that ths stoppage of the harbour work* would he a grots violation of public faith guaranteed by legislative enact ment, and would inflict an injury on the whole district."

At the meeting, which was the largest ever held at Woltara, there were persons from al parts of the Provincial District. The matter was fully discussed, when it was conclusively ahown that the figures noted in the Parliamentary report were wrong, and amongst other things it was stated that in six weeks' time the cement for the works, which ia expected to arrive in Wellington from England, can bf landed at the end of the breakwater -.then completed by vessels of small draught; also, that with the plant noT on the ground the breakwater can be extended to 21 feet of water at low spring-tide for tbe money now in band. The present superintendent of workß wan engaged on the Aberdeen breakwater, and also successfully built tbe one at Arbroatb, and before leaving tho latter place was presented with a valuable te«rimoni»l for the successful manner he carried out the work, and therefore speaks from experience- He states that the work can be done for the money. The harbour muter sr.ys that for 300 days oat of the year vessels can lie alongside the wharf.
