VITAL STATISTICS. The vital statistics for January are aß> follows:— Borough. Births. Deaths. Auckland .. 48 82 — 288 Thames .. 22 13 240 Wellington ~ 103 57 — 3M Nelson .. 22 U — 2.13 Cbristchurch .. 60 33 — 248 Dunedin .. 70 24 — 108 Hokltika .. 12 2 -0 62 Invercargill .. 21 3 _ 080 Totals .. 361 178 '.■ A considerable increase in the numberoor£ r deaths in the preceding months has to be noted,., the deaths having risen in number from 1325 in December to 178 in January, an increase of" 46. Zymotic diseases caused 78 deaths in January, against 33 in December, an increase of 45, or within one of the total increase for themonth. Of these, dysentery and diarrhoea*, caused an increase of 34 deaths during January,. there being 18 in December, againat 52 in January. In Wellington alone there were 19» deaths, or half the total increase. Of the> 52 deaths from this cause, 42 were of infante under one year. Constitutional Diseases.—The deaths from?.. these diseate3 were two leas in number than in December. Phthisis caused nine deaths in Jan- ■ vary, against 13 in December. Local Diseases.—There was a decrease of six:. in the total number of deaths from these diseases as compared with December, but thereis no marked feature in the particulars of." decrease. The vital statistics for the district of Dunedin?. for the month of February were as follow:— Births, 137; deaths, 47; marriages, 33. Fifty-six deaths, 63 births, and 26 marriages--were registered this month in the city of Dun— edin.
