MESSRS A. AND T. BURT'S NEW BUILDINGS.

i Havina found that, notwithstanding repeated additions to their premises in Erincei s- reefc, the erection of their extensive workshops in Cumberland street/and.the opening of a branch establishment at Port Chalmers, then- business, has so much increased that still more extensive premises are required, Messrs A, and T. Biirt, the.well-known;plumbers and brass-founders, have decided to ; build on a quarter-acre section at the junction of- Stuart and Cumberland streets. The first portion to be erected consists of a building, having a frontage of 66 feet to Stuart street, and 75 feet to Cumberland street. The main part will be nearly 50 feet in height, divided into three 'storeys. On the ground floor'will1 be the counting-house, a show-room for general goods, and a store for piping, etc. (The first; floor, wi]l simply comprise a showroom for chandeliers and gas and other fittings ;of a useful.and ornamental character. The top floor will be ' for storing light goods and showing portablei baths, washhand basins, and other articles' of a similar description which will be kept in stock, ready for introduction into houses without any trouble further than joining the supply pipe to them. The plans for the new building have been prepared by Mr \David Ross, and tenders "are no,w being called for the same.. It is to be erected on substantial foundations .of'concrete, the.plinth all round to be of.Tort Chalmers stone, fine-axed, the first storey walls of stone, and all the rest of brick. Both fronts will be cemented and enriched with moulded cornices, &c. ' In the centre of each top front will be the Otago arms, supported by ornamental trusses on each side, and having the names ef the proprietors in raised letters underneath. The roofs will be of slate, and the pillars inside supporting the floors will be-iron. The whole of the work" will be of the most substantial end permanent character, giving an additional proof that the Messrs Burt have every confidence in a. continued demand for the various industries connected with their business, which they started on a small scale here in 1802.
