CRICKET.

; The match on the Oval on Saturday was between the First Eleven of the Dunedin Cricket Club and eighteen of Carisbrook. The weather was such as to make cricket unpleasant, being very cold, with occasional showers during the day. The ground was in splendid order, and reflects credit on the person who is in charge. Owing to the heavy shower which fell between two and three o'clock, the match did not commence until well on in the afternoon. The Oval presented a gayer appearance than on any previous occasion this season, therejbeing a good many of the fair sex in the pavilion, whilst many of the sterner sex were scattered round the 0 vaL Messrs Meares andF. Fulton captained the rsspective teams. The former winning the toss, decided to take the defensive. Allen and Meares were the first to appear, but the former did not stay long, being clean bowled by Austin. Morrison took the vacant wicket, and slow run-getting was the order of the day. The first five wickets fell for about 30 runs. Meares, through his leg giving way, had a man to run for him. When he had scored 22, in backing up too much, he was run out. He played a very careful game. Macfarlan, who we are g.Ud to see once more handling the willow after an absence of a season or two, showed some of his old hitting propensities. His score of 22 was got by hard hitting, including two fours, several threes, and the rest singles. Although he gave one or two chances, lie played a good innings. The remainder of the wickets call for no comment. The Eleven played a man short, Paramor being unable to take part in the game through an accident. The innings closed for a total of 85 ; of that number 12 were extras. The fielding in some instances was loose. Cargill was very smart at point, as also Fulton F., at mid-on. Austin bowled remarkably well. Rose and Dixon for the Carisbrook were the first to appear, the former being caught by Allen behind the ptumps, without scoring. M'Neil H., then joined Dixon, and they kept their wickets until time was called—M'Neil with 25 and Dixon with 12, The total for one wicket was 40, including three extras. As far as the game has proceeded the Eighteen his much the best of it. It has been decided to play the match out. It will he resumed next Saturday at two o'clock, when the Pavilion will be again set apart for the laHies. We have been informed that the Caledonian Band will play several selections during the afternoon. Subjoined are he scores ana bowling analyses:—
