It is reported that the Directors of the New Zealaud Shipping Company are considering tenders from Eugland for the construction of two large steamers, superior in size and power to the ffawea and Taupo, recently built for the Union Company, Dunedin. If they decide upon the acceptance of the tender, the capital of the Company will ba increased. Snider rifles were issued to the Volunteers here to-day. His Excellency the Governor will lay the foundation-stone of the new Presbyterian Church in Willis street to-morrow. Prank Murray, arrested at Hutt yesterday, for an attempted stick-up of the Collector of the Hutt Highway Board on Saturday evening, was brought before the Magistrate this morning, and committed for trial. Melbourne, June 23r& The election for the Western Province to the Upper House yesterday occasioned more than the usual interest of Council elections* The candidates were Mr Samuel Wilson, the wealthy squatter, and donor of £3000 to tha University, and Mr Anderson, a local man, of some means. The squatter prevailed, and secured his election by a large majority in-av strong squatting district. Early yesterday morning a fire occurred on the premises of Thomas Luke and Co., King street, tea merchants, which were totally destroyed, with the stock. Thfe adjoining premises of Francis and Macphersort were much damaged by fire. Luke was in.sured for £13,000 in the following offices :— Australian Alliance, London and Lancashire,. National, Northern, and Victoria.
