Monday, 21st June. (Before T. A. Mansfdrl, Esq., R.M.) DncNK.—-H. Watt, F. Fish, and —Corrigan, seamen belonging to the Earl of Zetland, -were each fined 10s, or in default, 24 hours' imprisonment, for the above offence. D. M'Nally, similarly charged, pleaded that he had met a friend, and had taken a " drop too much." He had never been placed in stu-h a situation before, and hoped the Bench would deal leniently with him. Fish was charged with assaulting the Police whilst in the execution of their duty, and with attampting a rescue from Constable M'Leod. Sergeant Neil aud Constable Coffey proved the charge, and the prisoner was very violent, and struck Constable M'Leod. Corrigan wa.s charged -with obstructing the Police whilst they were arresting the prisoner Fish. Defendant averred that the Police had made a mistake —he was not the loan. The Police, however, proved conclusively that there was no mistake about the affair, ami the prisoner was fined ss, or in default 12 hours' imprisonment, this being in . addition to the other sentence passed on him. A Stowaway.—H. Grimble was charged by Captain Jones, of the steamer Bruce, with laving secreted himself on board the steamer Bruce at Timaru on the l'Jth inst. Ci] >tain Jones deposed that about two hours after the 'Bruce left Timaru, the defendant came aft and that he had no money to pay his passage. | He offered to " work it out," but his services not being then required, the present charge was "brought." In reply to the defendant, witness stated that if he had asked for work whilst the Bruce was at Timaru it would have been given Tiim, and a passage to Dunedin also. In his defence the prisoner averred that he was an unfortunate man, lately shipwrecked, and had no -wish to act criminally. His "Worship remarked that prisoner had rendered himself liable to a fine of L2O. It was not, however, the desire of the Court to act with undue severity, but at the same time such an offence could not be permitted to pass unpunished. He would be fined ■lAi, or in default to undergo 10 days' imprisonment with hard labour.
