As the ship Rosalia, once known as the D.n Juan—we .were not aware until Tuesday, that she had.beeg.r?-aiaui^il—is..attracting; some attention, and is likely to be further heard of, we take the oppor^ tunitjr afforded us-by the Collector of Customs and Captain Thomson, the Board of Trade 'Surveyor,: to publish the official reports made in connection with the above vessel. As appears from the reports further on, the Surveyor seems.to have acted throughout with tnoderation and good feeling, The first report is dated April 3rd, and is addressed to Captain Clark, of-the Ship Rosalia. It, was as follows:—'• I have the honcur to briny under your notice that, in order to make the ship Rosali* (at present under your charge):seawoithy, it will, in my opinion, be necessary to gaulk well the ■earns from keel to mast, to sheath her. from the gunwale to the round of the bilge with long lengths of. good Oregon or kauri pine planks, four inches in thickness, properly fastened with through-bolts, and wall caulked; one new iron breast-hook, heavier and longer in the tails than the broken one, and to.;be put in; alongside •f same, and properly fastened. The vessel to be refastened throughout, to' be re-coppered, and all defective"p!arilcß, titauiiehions, and-mainrail of the bulwarks to be renewed. ..Hopeful that will meet'with your »pprdv«l,'rtnd that you will cause'the af6re-menti6ned repairs to be .carried "out, I 'am; &C.;. Wm>Tiiojisox, Surveyor." -Th^next report is dated April 26th, arid is addressed to the Collector of Customs, as follows :— " To the CoKectotf of Customs.-'-Port .Chalmers, 26th April, accordance with your instructions l4h'aVe>ina/le'a;thprpush'Eurvey 'of the" ship' Don Juan, alias tbe Rosalia; and have thei honour to report «« foHoWg'j—That' there has not been any longitudinal binding put in, but a very partial refastening done, the bulwark! not caulked, and the bottom not coppered. Therefore, the vensel is not in a seaworthy condition. This vessel c*me into port very leaky, put •J shape, and very much strained. She is about 19 year* old, built of piiie in a Swedish port, not according' to Lloyd's rules for binding even when new; many of the fastenings that a»e started are left untouched, the butts and seams in the bottom are very wide, and in consequence the oakum is liable to fall out when the vessel begins to work," which she is certain to do. in a seaway ; and nothing short of the repairs I recommended in my communication of the 3rd inst. to the ownerj Captain Clark (of which you Tsave a copy), put that vessel in a seaworthy condition.—Signed—W. Thomson,' Surveyor." This is the stase at which the case has arrived, but we understand it is not to be left here, but will iarnb:ib!y name before the law courts.' Hence we {vithholda-iypinuiit,. and. also i because the JRosalia is closed to our inspection. At the same time

we may observe that Captain Thomson 1, is .tp.be corn-; mynded for doing what he has done in:the causeAofj duty- and a very disagreeable duty it i&v^.& £2£-"""' The steamer Maeri was expected froTri Oamaru about midnight, with-a quantity of grain for the ship1Oamaru. She is to leave astain for" Oamaru! onvFriday ■-, f...--*\ % .-.; :,*\ j «-V;j "* The Haibow Company's H.B.)Beauliful Star, Captain Peterson, lcame in-yesterday at 9.15 a.m., v^ith -IS passensrers and a full cxrgo of wheat and sundries shipped at Lyttelton, and:Timaru. She has kept; her usual close time;having'made the round, trip in 4J days, and reports fine moderate weather.from first toflast. Westerly and southerly .winds "prevailed heiice to Lyttelton, and light N.E>.winds from-Lyttelton up the coasfr until she fetched td within a couple of miles of the" Heads yesterday, when the breeze freshened, and increased as she passed the Heads and steamed up harbour. The Star left here on Friday afternoon last, arrived at Timaru at 3.30 a.m. next day, discharged 56 tans cargo and shipped .wheat and wool,, and.left,for_ Lvttelton in the evening, arriving there rat 9 a.rii. on Sunday. Left again at 3.30 p hi. on Monday, gained Timaru at 6.30 a.m. next day,.shipped.between 80 and 90 tons of wheat and other cargo, ai d left at 8.30 p.m , arriving as above... She .vent alongside the,Oamaru to tranship grain—744 bags—and is to leave again for Timaru and Lyttelton tomorrow. She remains at the Port this morning to ship railway iron. The steamer Phoebe wes nndocked 3-esterday and moved to the Railway Pier. She left yesterday afternoon for Lyttelton and the North, fairly freighted with 28 passengers and 91 tons of cargo. Amongst the passengers was Miss May Howard, of histrionic celebrity, , The schooner Estelle, which in another column is notified as being on the berth for Auckland, sailed from the Bluff for this port on Saturday last. From what Captain Peterson, of the Beautiful Star, reported yesterday, we are inclined to surmise that light or calm weather has been in the ascendant outside during the past few days, and, if so, accounts for the non-appearance of both the Estelle and the ship Timaru. The stiff nor'eiister that has beeti blowing here would {have been but a whole-sail breeze for so powerful a ship as the Timaru, and should have enabled her to fetch the port in three or four ticks! In like manner the Estelle, a smart, powerful schooner of Aberdeen buiJd, would also have worked down in 48 or 60 hours. It has been a case of too much or tori little wind with these vessels, and that it wns the latter is in a measure verified by the Star's report; which tells of little or no wind on the coast, until the Heads were nearly reached, when the breeze Jresh^ entd as it drew in. It is not an uncommon circumstance for a strong breeze to blow up or down harbour, whilst outside the Heads comparative calm reigns. i

The steamer Wallahi,: partly laden with railway iron shipped at the Kew Pier, left for Oamaru yesterday afternoon. • . •■ ■ •

The steamer Bruce came down from Dunedin yesterday, and went to the. New Pier to ship railway iron. She left for Lyttelton aiid intermediate ports in the evening. :

Bulk was broken on board the ship William Davie yesterday morning, and a good beginning made, 15 or 16 truck loads being discharged. ....-.- ; The steamer Comerang took in a few tons of transshipments from the Rangitikei and Kedron yesterday, and left direct for Riverton in the evening.' ; The steamer OUko, which left the Bluff yesterday evening, will be at the port first thing this morning. She has a large cargo to discharge here. s We notice that the schooner Duuedin is on the berth: for Timaru, and is to sail on Saturday next. i The ship Mallowdale is advertised to leave for New-; castle on Saturday next. Her cabin accommodation: is very superior. The 6chooner Bencleugh cleared out from the anchorage off the Kaik early yesterday niornirg, but the schooner Isabella Pmtt and steamer Sh g remained at anchor, and were still there last evening.

The s.s. Lady of the Lake arrived at Dunedin yesterday, with a full cargo of produce, among which was 700 bags of grain. She left the Molyneux at 0 p.m. on Tuesday, but encountering the full force of the N.W. gale then blowing, her arrival was delayed until noeu next day. To-morrow night she will leate for her usual port of call.

The Alary Ogilvie has the major portion of her freight stowed, and is expected to tail for Westport on Saturday.
