SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. Melbourne, January 4th. Arrived.—Australind, from Wellington. The New Ze \land S.S. Company has effected a change in its representation at this end of the Island, Mr W. H. Wheeler, who has so long held this position, havingbeeen superseded by Mr J. C. Cannon, late of the Company's head otfice, Wellington. Whilst extending a hearty welcome to Mr Cannon, we have to regret in the departure of Mr Wheeler, the loss of an old and tried friend, and a. gentleman who in his capacity of agent for the Company, has proved himself a thorough man of busuiess, and most courteous and obliging in his relations with the public. Mr Wheeler goes north to assume the management of the Company's affairs at Auckland—a position of equal responsibility and emolument to the one he hits voluntarily vacated here. We wish him yon- much success. A veryjheavy sea broke across the entrance of the port yesterday—so h- avy, indeed, that when the Geelong with the barque Duke of Edinburgh, outward bound for Newcastle, in tow, reached the Heads, the signal, " Bar dangerous," was hoisted, and so the barque, instead of going out, came to an anchor off the Pilots' Beach, whilst the tug returned to the Port. The sea, was the effect of the strong N.E. gale of Sunday night and Monday. Last night the weather still wore an easterly aspect, whilst the glass kept steady at about 29.70, as it had done during the previous thirty-six hours. The steamer Omco took her departure for Newcastle, via Lyttelton and the Strait route, yesterday evening. The Omeo loads coal at Newcastle, and then goes on to Melbourne, to return here again next month. The ship Invereargill bent sails yesterday, and has now quite a sea-going appearance. She, however, is not quite ready—a couple of hundred bales of wool are yet wanted to complete her loading—so that sue will scarcely get away before the end of the week, or perhaps Monday. Amongst other arrangements in the Sew Zealand and Mercantile Agency Company's Circular of November 17th, is one to the effect that the steamer Atrato had not arrived from Lyttelton. She was then 90 days at sea—a long long passage for a steamer of her power and capacity. The ship Wemington, from Lyttelton, was 91 days out; and the William Davie, from the Bluff, 80 days—neither having arrived. We observe th;:t the new s.s. Shag- commences her running in the Shag Point trade on Monday next. We have no doubt abont her doing well in it. The release of the ship Margaret Galbraith from quarantine was effected sooner than we anticipated. Yesterday she wa< admitted to pratique, and will be brought up to a discharging berth either in the stream or at the Railway Pier on Monday next. The Galbraith has over 10 0 tons of cargo for this port, about 400 tons of it being dead weight. The ketch Jessie was taken into Fletcher's slip last evening to have her bottom overhauled and cleaned. The ketch Kestrel was re-launched from Isbister's dip last night, and aneho ed in Carey's Bay, to ship her centre-board. As the board ships from the outside, it is possible there may be some trouble about it. Whilst on the slip, the Kestrel had her bottom looked to, the copper patched where necessary. The centreboard was also refastened throughout, and mounted with newiron work. Hence she goes to Catlin's River for a cargo of timber, and with the other smaller vessels of the fleet belonging to Messrs Guthrie and Larnach will be mainly confined to that trade. The sea at the Heads and the N.E. breeze of yesterday stayed the departures of the schooners Euphrosyne, bound to the Kaikoras, the schooner Spec, bound to Kakanui. and the ketch Edith Reid, bound to Oamaru. The Spec aud Edith Reid are both loaded with sleepers transhipped from the ship Wildwood, the Spec having 1100 on board, and the Edith Reid 3000. The barque Annie Lisle is to be towed to Dunedin on this morning's tide. ■ The schooner Fiery Cross is to come down from Dunedin this morning to load railway sleepers from the Wildwood. The steamer Wanganui left for the Bluff last evening, passing out without stopping at the Port. I'he departure of the s.s. Ea«by has been postponed to this morning, when she will leave early, passengers requiring to so down by the first train. The B.s. Wallabi his. been undergoing an overhaul during the last week alongside the Pelichet Bay Jetty. Portions of the woodwork In the cabin have been removed, the boiler and engines have been thoroughly looked to, and she has been repainted throughout, all of which will render this vessel well able to perform the work allotted to her. On Saturday she will most likely go down to the Port and load sleepers .from the Wildwood for Moeraki.
