PORT CHALMERS TOWN COUNCIL

The above council resumed ifcs sittings for the "year on Monday night. Present—His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Rose, M'KeDzie, M'Gregor, Innes, Menelaus, Middleditch, and Miller. Minutes of three previous meetings were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The following letter was received from Mr Wylie, as agent for'Mr Strachan, asking permission to blast at the railway works in connection with bye-law No. 2, and stating that every precaution would be taken to avoid accidents to life and property. Permission was granted upon conditions specified. The Mayor laid a letter before the Council from the nightman, its purport being thafc a proper manure depot was very much needed, the one formerly in use being closed by the owner of the land, Mr Dodson. It was resolved that tenders be called for three yeara for a manure depot, and the Works Committee to have power to acfc in the matter. A letter was received from Mr Hector Reid, one Qf the tenderers for Water Works, asking that his cheque deposited with the tender might be returned. The request was assented to. COMMITTEES' REPORTSReserves,— "We beg to withdraw our report of the 1-ith December last, and to suLstifcute the following, re sections 80 and 87, North Harbour and. Blueskin district :— That Mr Yeoman's resignation of the land be accepted, and that Messrs M'Ken?ießrcs. offer of December 7fch be accepted! Ifc is further recommended that a reward of £5 be offered by the Counoil to any person or persons who shall give such information as will lead to a conviction of anyone cutting or removing timber from any of the Corporation's unleased sections ; also, that tenders be called for the timber on the Town Belt, between the upper and lower roads, as tlie present rate of consumption by parties camping there, and others, will soon us? ifc all up. It is further recommended that, notwithstanding the late vote of the Council, the teuders for asphalting pavements should still be taken into consideration, being as cheap 5,3 tha work possibly could be done lor, and that the minutes refusing the tender be rescinded. Your Committee recommends Messrs Lindsay and Hendricson's offer, for tbe uso of a quarry for ballast, should he accepted, the ternis being from year to year, with power to remove or stop work at three months' notice fiom the Council." _ A long discussion ensued, aud finally, on the motion of Mr M'Kenzie, the report was reci ived. With regard to the clause in the report about M'Kenzie Bros., ifc was resolved that the Clerk write to them and state that their offer liad been accepted on the same conditions that governed tlje leasing of the Municipal sections, and that as sooii as Messrs M'lvensie no. ify their assent to the conditions, Mr Joyce, solicitor, be instructed to draw up the lease. Mr Joyce also to revise the lease of two sections previously leased to them. The rest of the Reserves Committee's report was adopted, exocpting that portion relating to the ballast quarry, which was ordered to lie over meantime. Sanatory Committee. — The Chairman verbally repoited the action of the Committee in connection with the Mary streefc fever case, and after some discussion it was resolved, on the lucxtio.n of Mr Dodson, that the Committee be empowered to burn any ; bedding and replace the same, and adopt : auy other measures decided upoa to prevent ; the spread of contagions disease. In'een. nection with this matter the Council author- | ised the Inspector of Nuisancos to communi- | cate with the householders of Mary streefc j wifch the view of having the premises thoroughly cleansed without delay. Mr Dodson moved, and the resolution was carried, that the Inspector b&a«thbrised to proceed against any parties found cutting timber on the Town Belt, ACCOUNT 3.
