Wellington, January Sfch. The following appointments have been Gazetted :—William James Jobson to be Inspector of Machinery for the Auckland district ; Henry Augustus Levestain to be Inspector of Wellington, Taianaki, and Marl-' borough districts ; George Croll to be Inspector for Canterbury and Westland district ; Thomas Cairns Burt to be Inspector for Otago district. The appointments to date from the Ist inst.

A number of gentleman representing the mercantile and shipping interests in Wellington assembled at the Pier Hotel this morning, and presented Captain Wheeler, of the Taranaki, with 100 soys. and an address on the occasion of his resigning the command. Mr J. A. Jones, of Dunedin, is gazetted as having passed the junior examination for the Civ'l Service.

Mr Cannon, accountant of the New Zealand Steam Company, before proceeding to Dunedin, where he will supersede Mr Wheeler, was entertained last night at a dinner, and presented with a gold watch and chain by a number of friends.

Mr Wheeler, the Company's agent at Dnnedin, is to be transferred to Auckland.

The ball to the Governor last night was considered very successful. About 400 attended. The Mayor occupied the chair, and proposed the health of his Excellency in complimentary terms. In replying, the Governor said he trusted that before he left these shores he would be able to claim a greater share of the esteem evinced that evening. He assured them of his determination to advance the prosperity and happiness of the people of the colouy. He believed the country had a great destiny before it. He knew of none of Her Majesty's colonies, though he had seen many, which held more promise of permanent and happy results than New Zealand. He hoped, in conclusion, that his residence among them might be long, and that when himself and Lady Normanby went away it would be with -their hearty good wishes, respect, and esteem.

The Marquis of Normanby has received his commission as Governor by the Califor* nian mail, and will be sworn in at 12 tomorrow with the usual ceremonies. The Armed Constabulary will form a guard of honour, and the Artillery fire a salute.

Mr O'Shea reports flour easier, from .£l3 to £13 10s ; bran, Is 3d ; oatmeal, £25 ; oats, 6s 3d to 6s Gtl : wheat, none ; barley, no sale ; hams, Is Id to Is 2d ; bacon, 3s. Mr Buckland reports :—Ship borne cattle, £1 5s to £1 7s per 100 lbs. : fat sheep, 3d to 3M; lambs, 12s 9d ; wethers, Ss to 15s.

Auckland, January Sth. Newton, the Maori, was sentenced to death for the murder of Henrietta, the Maori girl.

Drd. R. Nicholson, Provincial Secretary under Mr Gillies's Superiutendeucy, and head Good Templar, is dead. Bouman and Co., of Dunedin, have purchased the new schooner being built by Niccols. The price is £1800.

A requisition is being circulated asking Sir George Grey to stand for City west. The total export of gold, the produce of the Province during the year, was 7(),590 ounces. Value, £292,456.
