Total ... £722 2 9

Speaking of the Liverpool, London, and Globe Insurance Company, the London Review, of the Ist March last, says :—'? The annual meeting of this Company was held at ■ Liverpool on the 26th February, 1872. The Fire premiums for the year are announced as £1,131,594, and the losses as £1,178,749, out of which the Chicago losses amounted to £614,000. In the Life department, 1042 policies were completed, assuring £521,579 ; producing new premiums, £22,177. Both Life and Fire departments show a large increase on the previous year ; the increase in the Fire premiums being equal to the immense sum of £200,000, and in the Lite department to £6000. The total Life premium income is noAV £272,948, and the total assets £3,647,783, out of which £2,410,903. Thus the Life reserve has increased by more than £110,000 in the year, and the total assets are only diminished by £212,000 during the same period and after the unparalled catastrophe at Chicago. It affords us great pleasure to bear testimony to the frank manner in which the American Press and people, with insignificant and interested exceptions, have acknowledged the services rendered to citizens of the States by the Liverpool and London and Globe anel kindred companies. The American assets remain untouched, and the .English people will support the great office -in its efforts to maintain English credit and English honour. The losses of the present will be the profits of the future." POST OFFICE NOTICE. MAILS CLOSE— Tins Day, 29th Inst. For Southland, per s.s.
