THE SUPEEINTENDENCY.
. TO THE EDITOR. V \ Sir—l wish- to call the attention, of the electo'S of the province 'to the following extraot from a speech made by Mr Macandrew -at the declaration of the poll in February,. 1867, as showing how great the promise and how small the performance:—" The great object sow,. I think, is to unite shoulder to shoulder, in "holding 'our own against the common enemy.- There is no doubt whatever that hitherto we have been fleeced by the Northern Island.that we have been unequally yoked to it; and our great object should be to secure pur freedom. A large section of the people of the Northern Island has long been endeavouring to get quit of us ; but, strange to say, we have insisted upon the union of thetwoislands. We;have fondled our fetters, and have hngged the chain that binds us. Depend npoo it, the greatest barrier to our progress Is oar Northern connection. 1 hope we shall get a Council that .will go in : for Separation tooth and naiL;; I have no great hopes of. being able to fulfil the aapira- \ tions I cherish as to the future of Ofcago, unless we can get rid of the incubus that weighs on us, of the millstone that hangs ! about our necks.'' -..,- •.;> ..•■ •■ .-:;;-? i Subsequently Mr Grant addressed the 'people, and in the course of his-address, 'made the following remarks :—-" lam glad to find that the choice .of the people (Macandrew) has, at the eleventh hour come round to be a supporter of Separation. He did oppose it; but I am glad of the change, though there is an adage amongst the theological world, 'Beware of sudden repentances.'" . { It is quite evident that Mr Grant, knew the man he was speaking of much better than the majority of those who on that occasion, voted for him, and that the sudden repentance in his (Macandrew'B) case, at any rate, was not sincere. ■ •'' "' ']..'.'.'.'.'.: ."
