TO THE EDITOR.

Sir—l am greatly surprised to find sonic few of those who, on Friday laßt, voted for Mr Bathgate now supporting Mr Macandrew for the Superintendency. This appears to me utterly unaccountable, provided those now alluded to Voted for Mr'_' Bathgate on any principle of local or general policy, or now support Mr Macandrew on any other, than personal grounds, and simply because it is Mr Macandrew. ; It must be obvious to any one who looks at the matter for ;a moment that for any one first to vote for Mr Bathgate and then to vote for Mr Macandrew, is for one to /stultify himself, and t» pull down with one hand what he get up with the other. To prove this, we have only to see the programme of the two men to contrast them. . ■ ; MrBATHOATB: Mr Macaitdrew :! lam opposed to as- lam in favour of a slated immigration. large introduction of assisted immigrants^, and to this end supported the ImmigrationandPublic Works Acts of the General Government, ' The Otago Hun- The Hundreds B.edreds Regulation Act gulation Act limits is bad, and should be the compensation to instantly repealed, the squatter, profit was passed m the motes settlement most objectionable facilitates the placing manner, and ties up of land on the martheland, as it gives ket^ and should be unlimited, compenafc. administered, not retion to the squatter., pealed; , .-,■ ;. ■ I would ' prevent "Mr Macandrew rethe, land passin|{ in grete Lthat the pre| large quantities into._ emptive right of 720 the hands of one man, apres waa nofc conand would encourage ; ceded sooner, wheE the bbtainirig of a the runholder was in homestead by every a better position than working man. he is how to avail "••■: ' ." . himself of it, -and, --•-■■ ~ would"'promote the ...-,'., .placing a landed aris-| tbcracy'in Otago. : I will oppose the W% snpporfc the Government scheme scheme, aa he is asof .
