DUNEDIN PRESBYTERY.
The usual quarterly meeting of the Presbytery of Dunedin was held yesterday in the' First Church. The Re vs. Messrs Sutherland (Moderator), Wills, Stuart, Watt, M'Nau^hton, Todd, Christie, Ryley, Aives, Greig, Gillies, Blake, and Johnston, ministers, and Messrs Duncan, Hepburn, Chisholm, Blair, Smith, Thomson (Elders), were present. Mr Greig wa3 appointed Moderator for the ensuing six months. Mr Stuart iritimated that one of the office-bearers of the church had placed in his hands the sum of LIOO, to be devoted to missionary and evangelistic purposes. The Presbytery resolved to record their satisfaction at this example of liberality.
Answers were given in and approved to reasons of appeal of First Church ; and Messrs Will, Watt, and Gillies were appointed to represent the Presbytery before the Synod. Mr M'Naughton gave in. reasons of
appeal against the decision of last Presbytery in regard to St. Andrew's Church, and it was agreed that written answers b© not sent to the Synod, but Messrs Will,, Watt, and Gillies were appointed to defend the matter before the Synod. The Examination Committee reported that Mr Fleming, student, had passed his quarterly examination satisfactorily. The plans of the manse at Palmerstoit were approved of.
Mr Thomas Robertson, Otepopo, was appointed assessor to act for Hampden. session.
Mr Sutherland applied for the continuance of Mr Thomson at the Northeast Valley during the next three months, and proposed that it should be granted. It was proposed as an amendment to request the Church Extension Committee to appoint Mr Thomson to Palmerston. and Hampden for six weeks. The amendment was carried on a vote by thirteen to four. Mr Sutherland dissented.
Mr M'Naughton applied to grant moderation of call to St. Andrew's, and proposed to appoint Thursday, the 22nd instant, at 7 p.m. ; the Moderator of the Presbytery to preach and preside. The application was agreed to, and Wednesday, the sth October, at 11 a. m. appointed for consideration of the call.
Messrs Gillies and Hislop sent in their resignation as assessors for the North. Bast Valley Session. It was proposed, and agreed to, that consideration of the resignations be deferred until next meeting ; and that in the meantime the Prea- : bytery having been informed that tho congregation in North Dunedin have determined to build a church in Dunedin, and not in the North East Valley, as had" originally been contemplated by the* Presbytery in sanctioning the station, a committee be appointed to meet the congregation and confer with it on all matters aftecting it, and to report to the meeting of Presbytery on the sth October, the committee to consist of Messrs Will, Watt, and Johnston, ministers, and Mr J. Duncan, elder. Mr Johnston to act as convener.
