RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Tuesday, 29in August. (Before James Fulton, Esq., R.M.)

Drunk and Disorderly.—Jane Brown and William Master, charged with having been drunk, were each fined 20s or fortyeight hours' imprisonment. Isabella Johnston was charged with having used profane and indecent language in Mafford street, and was fined 20s or forty-eight hours' imprisonment.

Foul Chimneys.—James Maguire was charged with neglecting to clean the chimney of his hotel in Princes street, 'so that from the foulness thereof it took fire. He did not appear, ant? was fined 10s and. costs. Charles Henry Hardy was charged with a similar offence in Moray-place. He stated that there was no neglect on his part, because lie had his chimneys cleaned, every month, but he supposed there had been some carelessness on the part of his servant. He was fined 10t and costs.

Nuisances. — Edmund lleeve was charged, oa the information of the Inspector of Nuisauces, with neglecting to clean bis premises in Maclaggan street. He stated that the nuisance had been removed on the same day as the summons was served. He was fined 5s and costs. Alfred Hoare was charged with a similar offence in Maclaggan street. This case was in a similar position to the last. The defendant, was fined 5s and costs. Elijah Harrett was charged with permitting a nuisance to exist on hi 3 premises in George street. He pleaded tbat he had only been a few weeks in occupation of the premises, and that the nuisance was not caused by him, although it was on his land. He was fined Is and costs. David Steele was charged with a similar offence in George street. It was stated that orders had been given to a nightman to remove thi nuisance, but he had neglected to do so. Fined 5s and costs. "William Burke, Maria Brown, Mary Mitchell, James Wilkins, and Joseph Allen were charged with neglecting to clean their premises in Filluel street. The Inspector described the premises occupied by these defendants as being in a very filthy state; but as they were very poor people, they were each fined Is and costs. Jostph Martin, John Mitchell, and Woods and Seabrook were charged with simijar offences in Great King street. The nuisance complained of in this case was the drainage from the defendants' cottages, which flowed into a right-of-way. Woods and Seabrook appeared to be the principal offenders, and they were fined 5s and costs, while the other defendants were fined 2j 6d each and costs. James Loaper was charged with neglecting to clean his premises, in Great King street. These premises are situated in Loaper's paddock, between,.
