The Race.—The start was preceded by numerous failures, principally caused by the lractiousaess of Regalia, and the anxiety of Be Manderin and Pantaloon (started to njiike running for their stable companions)"' to get away in front. At length, at 11 minutes past 4 o'clock, the flag was dropped to an excellent start, Pantaloon, first showing in front, made the running with a clear lead, followed by Regalia, and Kangaroo, and Gladiateur being most conspicuous amongst the vanguard, which comprised Bedminster, Liddington, Zambezi, Breadalbane, and Archimedes, who ran in a line stretched across the course to the Bushes-hill, where Pantaloon held a lead of two lengths, but descending the hill he gave way, and Gladiateur going strong and well, showed slightly in advance of Liddington, who was closely attended by Zambezi, Bedminster, Breadalbane, and Kangaroo. In the next hundred yards, Wells commenced to move on Bedminster, and Kangaroo at the same moment hung out signals of distress. Archimedes, wide of the leading division, closed up, but Aldcroft waiting, the issue appeared confined to Gladiateur, Liddington, Zambezi, and Breadalbane, as the four entered the cords. Half-way up, however, Breadaibßiie was beaten, and though Zambezi and Liddington struggled hard to maintain their positions, the French hor.se gradually increased his advantage, and, defeating Aldcrofc's splenj did rush with Arcbimeles, won a mo-it [ exciting race by a neck, which distance separated the second and third. Zambezi, I beaten only about half a length, was fourth, a length in front oi Breadalbane, who was fifth; Jack p' Lantern, who passed Bedminster at the bottom of the hill, was sixth, I and nex: him were and Ariel.
