TO THE RATEPAYERS OF DONEDIN. f] ENTLEMRW—I have been so often asked vT why I did not come forward sooier as a Candidate for the office of Mayor; perhaps you will allow me to state to you plainly, in a few words, .how the matter stands. I had no intention whatever of offering myself, unless called on to do ho. I was away from home for about ten days previous to the nomination, and my friends, knowing that my concent was necessary to my being nominated, took no steps in the matter during my absence ; and it was not till the Saturday immediately before the nomination that they applied to me on the subj.ct. I then slid that it was too late, as those already in the field had got such a start, tint the case was hopeless. They, however, insisted that there was a very general feeling among the elector* that the first Mayor should be one thorouj{hty and essentially an Ota;:o raw. lat the last moment consented on (hit ground to put myself in your hands, and to abide your decision. I have already served you in various ways, and in different capacities, and have endeavored always to do my duty faithfully and honestly; and if you think me worthy of the oilice now at your disposal, you may rely on my best endeavora to promote the prosperity and welfare of our rising city. I am. &s, JAB. PATKBSON. l
