DUNEDIN WATER WORKS COMPANY.

A meeting of the shareholders of the Dunedin Water Works Company, for the purpose ot electing permanent Directors for the Company, was held in Farley's Buildings, Princes street, yesterday afternoon. There were between fifty and sixty shareholders present. Mr J. Bathgate, of the Bank of Otago, was called to the chair.

The Chairman said it would be fresh in the recollection of every shareholder present tbat a few weeks ago thsy met in that Hall, and a rerait was then made to fche Provisional Directors to use every exertion ta get the number ot shares taken up that would guarantee the shareholders ia proceeding with fche undertaking. The Directors were at the same time further instructed to register the Company. He was now enabled to announce that the effort to get the sha,res taken up in Dunedin had been very successful. -he Secretary informed him that 3100 shares had been taken up, and the deposits paid thereon, (applause). The Provisional Directors had always kept in view thafc they could nofc cimmence operations until at least 80OU shares had been taken up; but now, he was happy to say, that 100 more than the required number had been taken up. Now that the required number o. shares had been allotted, he had no doubt that the. undertaking would be carried to a successful issue • and tbey would now be able to dispose ot the shares now remaining on hand afc a prenium The Provisional Directors had complied with the Act and had registered the Company under a memorandum ot association, which "he would read. (The Chairman here read the Articles of Association.) All that now remained for the Provisional Directors to do was to call a general meeting of the shareholders and ask them to elect permanent Directors. Knowing that they had to come forward to hand over their trust on an early day, they considered that they had no right to take any preliminary step, so tliat their successors might find eveiything in readiness, only waiting their fiat, so that the Company wou'd go on smoothly to a prosperous termination. They had been offered the use of an office at a very reasonable rate, but they did not complete tbe arrangement, leaving it to tlieir successors to settle. They had alsD arranged with the Enjinear as to the remuneration which he was to receive. He was to be paid by a limited per centage, so that he would have no interest in adding works on works. But the completion of this arrangement they aho handed over to their successors. In order to set ihe company agoing at once the provisional directors would now hand over their offices, and ask tbe shareholders to elect permanent directors to carry on- the..duties. He might state that each of the provisional directors, were open for re-election, but of course this lay entirely ia the hands of fche shareholders. Whoever they did elect as their directors, he trusted that no other motive would weigh with any ot them.

than a single handed desire to do agreat benefit to Dunedin and its inha' ifcants. The election of nine directors for the ensuing twelvemonths was tben proceeded with, and the following gentlemen were nominated:-Messrs J. Bathgate, T. Dick, W. H. Reynolds, a. 3. Martin, K. When Mr Ca«per was nominated, he declines to stand, statins thafc he intended shortly to go home, but his name was allowed to stand on thelist for tbe decision of the meeting. After some conversation, it was agreed to taKe the >-ense of the meeting, by the Chairman making out a list of tbe names proposed, and each shareholder should go to the tab: e and intimate the gentlemen for whom he voted by making a mart after nine names. This having been done, tbe following result was arrived at:— m
