Brings 58 pas- - sengers . The Inter-colonial Company's steamer Lord Ashley is due from Northern Ports to-day, but up to a late hour had not made her appearanc^. She has probably been detained by the thick weather along fhfrco?.st. The'barque Malay sails on Saturday for Newcastle, with a few passengers. U^der her present charter, she lias got two trips to make from that port to Utapro with coal freights. The barque P.O E . recently purchased here, is now receiving such slight repairs as are necessary to fib her for sea. and will sail shortly under command of Captain M' Farlane. Though the fact bas not been generally known, it appears that for some time past, the hulk Thomas and Henry has been proclaimed as a place of imprisonment. It is therefore, within •the power of the Resident Magistrate, at Port Chalmers, to order offenders to hi incarcerate! *here, but as yet no steps have been taken to render the vecsel fit for the reception of convicted persons. The hulk has been fitted out as a prison at great expense, and Mr Joseph Tuckwell lives on board as custodian, but no provision has yet been made for the oversight and dieting of prisoners. Only recently a number of seamen who were brought up for trial at Port Chalmers, had to be conveyed to aa<l from the Dunedin prison, involving an amount of trouble and expense which would have been, avoided had sum" -. ■cient preparation been made, by. the appointment of .warders or other officials, for their accoinoda'tion in the Thomas aad Henry.
