L 222 IM, The Laughing Water arrived this morning from Mauritius, bringing dates to the 4th December, and advising nn advance in sugar of L 5 per ton, in consequence of the great advance in the European markets, advice of which had just been received. We also observe that this sudden advance in Mauritius had caused a total suspension <f shipments to ull the colonies. Similar advices have evidently reached Melbourne judging from the excited state of tl;e sugar market there, as will be senn by a reference to the extracts from the l< Argus" given bsiow Melbdx7rne.—We extract the following from the " Argus" of the 9th in*t:— The markets have again been active. Sugnrs recently purchased have changed hands at a con Bideiabl* advance on the openii'U- prices of the y.:nr.' There has been some enquiry as to to- ' baccn, rice, and candles, but'the mail's advices will be looked for before any change is likely to take place. The reports of a deficient har.vesf are widily spread 'nough to cause a firm fVelinp in the wheat and flour market, without loading to any marked cba ere Wheat is wanted, and newly-ariived parcels from South Au-trali'i havr 'ouwl ready buyprs at 6s per buslie . Hops of first quality are inquired after. Butter, since the setting in of hot. weather, has been n.glectei!. Witli regard to the 1- ter inteL'gence from Uhina, noticed iv our issue this morning, a correspondent

who appears to b» tolerably well informel of the condition of the China market, writes: — " To the Editor of the ' Argus.' " Sir. - In torday'a " Argus" there is a list ot tea shipr ladine at Foo.chow at latest dates, which is calculated' to mislead both buyers and ■ sellerSr—l-beg-to-infurm you that one ship in the list arrived .at' Adelaide some time back; another had; p)jt back.' to Hong Kong..damaged;; and another (the Balder) was neither at. Foo-chjow nor going. there.: while another wa» chartered for chow-chow cargo and not for tea. " I am, Sir, youi s truly, " A Tea Dealer. "Jan. 8." Some of the rumours spoken of yesterday appear therefore to be tacts, according to this letter. cSome of the vessels named hava arrived, and another has taken chow-chow cargo on board, and one had put back damaged.- One vessel, the Balder, was not under charter, to far as the report goes into detail, i*. appears to be correct. With reference to the sugar market, the '• Argus" of the Bth says:— The marKets tiave generally been quiet; but some rnnsiderable excitement, has taken place in sucar. A bout 10.000 bags have changed hands privateH' at the following prices :—First crystals, L46to 1-18; yellow crystals, LlO to L 4 2; fir:t counters, T>39 to T,41; second counter, L 36 to L3B ; ratios, L3O per ton. Adriatic, Nil Desperandum, and Anvzon, all from Maurit us. consisting of about 18 OUO bags Mauritius sugar?, at very full prices, the condition regardc 1, for n-t cash. They also sold, on usual terms, the residue of the sound portion of the cargoes of ths Formosa and the Adriatic, consistiug of 3778 bags Mauritius sugar, at from Li 2 10s to L 43 15* for good white crystals, and L3Blos to L4O for coun ters; and privately, at prices not transpired, the entire cargo of the Silentium and dtto, from Mauritius, and the balance of the cargo of the Madras, together 12 100 bags. A telegram from Sydney 6th inst in the " Age" says: — Sugars are still being bought up privately. Holders are very firm. 5y auction, to-day, the cargo of congous, ex Burnswerk, was disposed of at full rates, and some parcels of Mauritiussugars brought prices showing an advance on Christmas rates of L 3 per ton. ! South Australia.—We have our files from South Australia to the 4th inst. We extract the following:— Flour: Prices continue the same, Lll to Lll 10s per ton. Wheat: Ther« is a demand for immediate delivery at about 4s 41 per bushel, but buyers show less inclination to buy for delivery in a week or ten days, except at a reduction in pric?. Tasmania.—We have our files from Launceston to the sth inst, and from Hobart Town to the 4th. The "Cornwall Chronicle," of the first-name! date, says:— Business has this week opened very quietly, with unaltered quotations. Flour, Lll to Lll 10s. Wheat was sold to-day at 53. Bran, Is 4d. Tasmanian oatmeal, 235. Oats, 5s 6d. Potatoes, butter, Sea, nominal. We take the following from the " H. T. Mercary" of the 4th :— The week pa«t has been so much interrupted by ho idays, that business has been quite unhinge 1. They may now, however, be said to be all over, aid a reaction may be looked for in . the coming week. The grain market,' owing to the non-arrival of any description of grain, has been quite dormant, nor is any improvement, anticipated until the incoming cop is ready for ale. Wheat is qioted at from 5* 6il to ss. 91. Hay, new, offers freely at L 4 103 to L 5, but old is very scarce, and worth L 6 to L 6 103. ;F r pressed hay 'there is a fair demand, with light itocks. Wool now daily arrives in large parcels, and up to the present time has sold freely at Is 21 to Is 5d ; but as the time for the arrival of the English mail appraches, the demand somewhat slaskens, and it is not improbable that during the latter end of next week buyers mly evince less disposition to purchase than at pres nt. ■■■'■- From the Weekly Circular of Messes Synnot and Guthrie. of Gjelong, we extract the following relative to Store Sheep,—We have again to repeat 'our remarks of the last few weeks. The demand for wethers and young ewes for New Zealand con tinues »s bristc as ever, notwithstanding the large number tint, have already been bought for that market. We have also a considerable enquiry for the same class of stock for this market, as well as for bretding ewes and weaners.. Very iew lots of any kind are'now offering, nearly all the surplus stock having been bought up. We have sold Ihe following lots during the week:—42oo six-tooth wethers, at 9* 61I; 3100 two and fourtooth wethers, at 8s; 5330 lour tooth wethers, at 9s; and 2900 half-fat wethers, at 10s 6d-Total, 15.530. As will be seen on reference to our advertising columns, we have still a great many applications for every dcs -ription of store stnek; consequently we have no doubt of being able to effect a sp3edy. sale of suitable lots at quotations Quotations: • Wethers, six to eight-tooth, 9s to 9a 6J; wethers, superior large framed sheep, 9s 6d to 10s'; young ewes, two and four-tooth, 10s 6d to lls ; young ewes, superior lots 11s 61 to 12s; Full-mouthed sound ewes, 7s 6J to 8s 6d; fall-mouthed sound ewes in lamb, 9s to 9i 6d.
