DUNEDIN LIVE STOCK MARKET

Wright. Robert3ok and Co.'s report for the week ended 15th January, 1864. Since our last report we regret to have to state ihat uleuro-pneumonia his made its appearance in a hf-rd of store certle recently imported per Jessie Munn from Twofold Bay. These carle had besn placed in paddocks at Wnikouaiti by the purchaser, John .Tones, Esq., anil had improved very m c'n, when su'ldenly, without any apparent cause, about 20 head died, and on being inspected they had all the appearance of beina1 infc'Ctel. Mr Jones at once called the attention of the Chief Inspector of this Province (Mr Logic) to this fact, and he, with other competent judges, proceeded to Waikouaiti, and had several of th" cattle killed, when, on examination, they werepr >nounced di-ea-el. Out of tbe number first put int^ the paddock (230 head) 2i) huad have died, and the rest, we understand, have been ordered by Mr Jones to be destroyed. a. deputation waited upon his Honor the Superintendent to learn what steps the Government intended taking- to prevent the spreading of pleuro-pneumonin, and were informed it had been decided to proclaim WaiVouaiti, as far as Shag River, an inf cted district, and also to rescind the proclamation declaring Twofold Bay a port from which catt'e may be imported, those, however, now in transit from there to be permitted to be landed, but to be subjected to a very strict examination. The fact of having a case of pleuro-pneumonia amongst imported store cattle has completely stopped nil transactions for the present; and should this disease make its appearance in other parts of the province, the Government will doubtless use strong measures to prevent it spreading, by proclaiming a wide district infected. ' Fat c.tttle will sl.ill require to be imported, as the supply in the province is limited; but great caution must be exercised at the port of shipment in seeing that they are really free from disease, otherwise one cargo arrivin« infected would probably cause the whole of the Australian ports to bec'o^fd. The arrivals by seaboard have been the Schah Jehan, from Twofold Bay, with cattleand sheep; Lorenzo ivabine, from Launceston, with horses; Onieo, s 8., and Indiana, from Melbourne, with sheep and horses; and Panama, from Geelong, with sheep and horses. Fat Gattlb.—The number arrived has been in excess of the demand, but the major portion having been disposed of to the up•• country trade, the supplies on hand are moderate. Storh Cattle.—We have no transactions to report this week, the announcement of p'europneuinonia having broken out am' ngst the Jei^sie Munn'd cattle, putting a stop to all sales then pending, an'l to force them at the prese-i t moniTit ft very lew price would have to be ta'?en.
