Jemima Petersen, of _Eden street, was charged with- allowing cattle to stray within the borough. The borough solicitor (Mr A. G. Creagh) said that the case was in reality brought as a warning. There had been many complaints of cattle grazing on the borough . streets, and Iden street especially. He did not wish in the present instance to press for the full penalty, but it was not generally known that persons 'convicted were liable to a fine of £1 in addition; to poundage fees. . The defendant said that the borough inspector had told her to put the offending animals, two calves,' into the reserve. The fences on the reserves would not retain calves. This was admitted by the inspector (Mr Whyte) and by Mr Creagli. The Magistrate said that if the fences were insecure as regarded calves they should not be put in the reserves. In view of the state of the fences he convicted and discharged the offender.
