SMUGGLING OPIUM.
Per Press Association. Wellington. July 7. Two of the Chinese crew of the steamer Northern while smuggling opium ashore, were caught- by Custims officials last night-, and to-dav each was fined £25 or two months' imprisonment. The shipping company paid the fines in preference- to entering into £IOO bonds and having t-o bend tho offenders out- of the country at the expiration of the sentence.
