PERSONAL SERVICE.
ON THE RAILWAYS. (Feb Press Association.) Dnnedin. June S. Twelve cleaners in the railway service were charged at the Police Court this morning with failing;to render personal service under the Defence Act. It was stated bv Captain Hickey that defendants were called out. for parade one morning and marched to the tram terminus St North Easf Valley, where in order to give them..a rest they were dismissed and told to fall in again in about ten minutes. Defendants got on •i trarocar and went. home. They were told to come off the .car and fall in, but declined. ~ Mr Macgrecor for-the -defence said on" the date in question the young fellows complied with what wax known as hlne standing orders'issued to them, which notified them /they- must attend another of the parades, they had been attending for months, .past: viz parades of 1-1 hours. When they stopped for a rest," that time had expired and they appealed to the captain who told them it was a half-day parade.. That was the first intimation of the hair-lay parade thev had received, and they told the can'tain so. Counsel submitted no offence'was disclosed and the case ought not to, have been brought. Mr Bartholomew reserved judgment.
