The cable advice received a few days ago stating that a cargo of New Zealand wheat (new crop) had been sold at 35s 6d is not accepted as correct by grain merchants in Christchurch. The best offers they have received are 33s 3d and 33s 4d, and they do not consider that more than 2s per quarter more than this could have been paid. The market remains firm, but with little doing, as farmers are still refraining from offering their grain. The price of bran for local consumption has been raised. Chaff is very firm, and the local demand has increased with the advent of colder weather. rotators arc now being pitted, and the offerings have therefore eased off. The demand is quiet, and the best prices now offered are 60s and 66s at country stations. JUNCTION YARDS. Messrs Uruet: Christie and Co. held their usual weekly stock sale at the Junction Yard.-* yesterday, when therewas a fair attendance. Cattle. —50 head were yarded. Fats are scarce. 'Che safe for low-conditioned stock was very dragging. Fat sheep sold fairly well, especially wethers, but soundmouth vwea did not meet with the keen demand expected. FROZEN MEAT MARKET. The Colonial Consignment and Distributing Company, Limited, reported •as follows on April 7th:— New Zealand Mutton. —The arrivals comprise the Nairnshire 5046 carcases, Matatua 42,777 carcases, and Athenic about 24,000 carcases. The demand 's still very slow and the wintry weather tends to restrict business in mutton. The supplies of Canterbury sheep are still extremely light, and the fancyprices asked bear no relation to other quotations in the mutton market. North Islands are relatively plentiful, and the majority of holders arc trying to push sales at 2;Jd to 3d per lb. The normal quotation for good light carcases is3.'td per lb, but not many make this figure, while ewes have been sold as low as 2Jd per lb. The competition between importers is largely responsible for the present weakness. Australian mutton. —The only arrival has been the Orontes with 750 carcases, and it appears that stocks are being, rapidlv reduced to moderate proportions. " Good quality maintains its value at 23d to 2|d per lb, and ewes cannot be bouglit at less than 211-16 d, but provincial markets have not yet firmed tin to this level. "Frozen lamb. —Receipts during the week consist of 172.399 carcases from New Zealand and 9990 carcases from South America. The market is in a curious condition. The demand still leaves something to be desired, but the undertone is distinctly stronger and difficulty is experienced in buying lines at tin- official quotations. Canterbury brands meet a fair inquiry and are worth up to 5Jd per lb for'3Blb car-ca.-!'s. Lighter weights can be bought a 1 4;d per lb. North Islands arc plenlii'oi. but inferior carcases predominate. Yalms range from 4d to 4;d per lb. Australians are dealt in at last rates, but business is not active and prices a:>• weak. Frozen Beef. —Receipts consist of 1(1.9-12 quarters from New Zealand and 15.115 quarters from South America. Prices arc not quite so firm and the sale is slow, hnt the stocks in store, although slightlv larger, are still very moderate. The quantities afloat, however, show a substantial increase.
