iS SPRAYING THE CAUSE? (J'eii Press Association.) Hastings. May 12. Writing to the Tribune re bitter pit in apples, Mr F. E. Nottage, Inspector of Orchards for Hawke's Bay, mentions two facts which appear on the surface to largely discount the value of the theory advanced by Dr Jean White and Professor Ewart, of Melbourne University.. They are: (1) Tn Western Australia, where the eodli'i moth is'unknown and arsenical spraying .never resorted, to, bitter' pit is alarmingly prevalent, arid occasions great' loss to fruit growers every .year;' (2) in his travels round the orchards if the Dominion during' the past four years' l he frequently noticed fafttef pit.in'.lxees which, have never been-sprayed for'the/ control .of codlin moth or .ojther-pestV Mr Xottage is a .practical grower" .-if many years experience. • '.j
