Donald Owens appeared before the Magistrate, Mr T. Hutchison, this morning charged with having oh February 23 at Waitaki South obtained the suni of £2 16s 4d from Alexander Co.pelarid by means of a false pretence, W wit.by falsely representing that he was employed by" Messrs Young, of Christchurch, wine and spirit merchants,'to take orders for Thorn and Cameron's whisky.

Mr Lee. who appeared for Owens. stated accused sfemed to be a man of somewhat criminal instincts. He had drifted down and was at present under sentence imposed at Timnrii for offences committed .subsequently to this. Counsel stated that lie had spoken to accused, pointing out to him the danger he ran .of being declared aii habitual criminal. Accused was a man fairly well connecti*d and apparently of some education.

Sergeant Sianponlo. stated thai accused' 1 was arrested mi a warrant taken out .at Oamani and then char-jed with offences committed -uhveqtientlv.
