AUCKLAND WANTS AN EXHIBITION.

(Per Press Association- ) Auckland. .May 12. Tin- iir.si important f-tiigc towards holding a big international exhibition i:i Auckland was taken this afternoon, when tin- Chamber of Commerce praeriVali.v committed itself to the undertaking, and authorised a public meoti'.wi to be railed to discuss the necessary sieps. '1 ho Chamber received a report of the Ci)!i!!:iitrec appointed to confer on the matier, which'stated that the Committee had unanimously resolved —"That a fust-class international exhibition should be held in Auckland within the next two years." I fir- Chairman (Mr 100 Myers), in moving the adoption of the report, reminded members'that it was 33 years ,since tjie last exhibition was held. For some time past considerable discussion had taken place in business circles in regard to this matter, and the proposal seemed to have met with general approval, not oiily in Auckland but elsewhere. One Wellington paper, however, seemed to think that it was the intention of the provisional committee to asK the Government for financial assistance similar to that given to the Christehufeh Exhibition, for which the Government was mulcted to the extent of. some. £50,000 or C 60.000. He (the president) wished to say that the AuckChamber of Commerce did not cuggpsi; that tlie. Government should subsidise the exhibition in this way. and that the Chamber would be satisfied with a much smaller amount than that. The exhibition would give an excellent opportunity for aiding and generally assisting in demonstrating the progress of the Dominion. There was a general expression of opinion at the time that tlie financial aspect of ibe Christchurch exhibition was being considered, that an exhibition supported by Government subsidies should be held at reasonable intervals in each of the large cities of tlie Dominion, so lie thought the Chamber of Commerce might go to the Government with every reasonable expectation that their reouest would be granted.—(Hear, hear.) He moved the adoption of the Committee's report. Mr Gu'nson seconded the motion, which was carried without dissent.
