BASE INGRATITUDE.

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—When I first read your leading article to-night exposing those horrible ungrateful Socialists in Christchurch for threatening to run a ' 'gentleman named Thorn" against Mr Ell, it simply made me weep. "This baseless case of black ingratitude that has disgraced the fair pages of Democracy in New Zealand" should be punished by a special Act of Parliament, the same as the Wade Government passed a special Act to punish Peter Bowling and the other leaders of the Newcastle strike. The case would go very hard against those liorrid Socialists hi Christchurch if their was no extenuating circumstance. But after giving your article careful consideration, my opinion somewhat changed, and my tears ceased to flow. If Mr Ell has done so much for democracy as you say, if he has grown grey in the fight for Socialism, if he has lost his time, spent his money, denied himself proper rest, and for 13 years suffered for the sake of bleeding humanity, would it not be a blessing to him if the Socialists gave him a political rest and put his political harness on to "Thorn." The Socialists don't believe in overworking any person,'and, according to your loading article, Mr Ell is a very much overworked and underpaid man, who has for a number of years suf-' fefed for humanity. The Socialists' doctrine is to make everybody do their fair" share of work, and evidently they think that Mr Ell has done his share of work- and suffering for the people, and that it is time "Thorn" took a turn at it.—l am, etc., H. A. CAMPBELL,
