THE AMOKUJRA.

The Government training ship for boys, the Amokura, steamed into Timaru Harbor early 'yesterday morning (says the Herald) and anchoied in the basin. The vessel looks neat and trim as usual, and is still in charge of the popular Commander Hooper, who lias associated with him Lieut. Barnsdalc as chief officer, and Mr l?yko, first engineer. "3hc Amokura ' \came to Timaru to pick rip three lccruits who joined her there this morning. Commander Hooper stated that the vessel has 00 boys on board, this being the l full number which the ship is able to cany. Two Timaru boys (Messrs Wagstaff and Bennett) left the Amokuia on Tuesday last to join the Aorangi proceeding to San Francisco, these boys having completed 18 months' service on the training ship. They were recommended for that fine vessel by the Commander, mainly owing to their conduct and bearing.' Commander Hooper added that he now had boys who had been trained on his ship in almost every part of, the world; thev were highly spoken of, and all seemed to be doing well ■ His one regret is that the Amokura is too small for the work required of her, and the sphere of usefulness in connection with the scheme could be extended with much benefit if it were possible to.obtain a larger vessel. The Amokura goes from Timaru to the Bluff, calling at Port Chalmers, and from the Bluff ! she will leave about a week hence for i the Sruthern Islands.
