, Poaching in the Kakanui River was referred to by Mr Sumpter at last night's meeting of the Waitaki Acclimatisation Society. Mr Sumpter stated that large dead trout, obviously killed by -dynamite, had.'been seeii floating down, the river; and he described the finding in his tent, which was seldom used, of a coil ofVfuse, planted under the matting•' of the bed, by someone who had been making use of it to explode 'dynamite in -the river, _From certain facts which had come under his notice, he believed that &■ clue to the, identity of the poacher could be found. In the evening there was a largo attendance, and a musical programme by the choir and friends under the direction of Mr Kandall was well rendered and much appreciated. The programme for this evening's entertainment is a. specially full and attractive bno, including hat-trimming and darning for men, woodsawing and nail-driving for ladieß; shooting, etc.; for all of which good prizes are offered. Thcro will bo musical selections by an orchestra under direction of Mr It. Meldrum, and action songs and tableaux arranged by Mi- Barrett. The balance' of goods on hand will be offered at attractive prices, so that intending purchasers , will be ablo to buy most advantageously, while for those individuals who are merely hungry a well-equipped tea-room offers every facility for refreshment. This morning Mr M'Doual , on bplialt of tho Oamaru staff of the National Bank, presented Mr Macdonald with a, gold pencil case and a silver-mounted mother-of-pearl paper knife. In making the presentation tho manager congratulated Mr Macdonald on his promotion, and emphasised tho fact of hw popularity, with both the staff and clients, as an attribute to his ability and unfailing courtesy. Yesterday afternoon the Golf Club, of which Mr Macdonald has been treasurer, through Mr H. M. lloxby, presented him with a leather writiug case and letter wallet. From the Oamaru Tennis Club, tor which he has also acted as treasurer, Mr Macdonald .received a token of esteem and goodwill in tho form of a handsomo walking stick. The secretary of the Otepopo Athletic Society informs us that D. Sanson! will bo a competitor at the sports at Herbert on Wednesday next (Labor Day). Sansom has entered for tho 100 yards, 220 yards, 440 yards, and halfmile, and in tho various events is conceding big handicaps to such pedestrians as Aitcheson, D. ltodgcrs, Sparks, Leo, and others of tho district's frontrankers. . .
