TRADE WITH CANADA.

THE DOMINION'S TRADK COMMISSIONER.

(Per Piiess Association. ) Auckland, July '-'.'. Mr W. A. Doddoe, 111 0 Canadian Commissioner, \vln> arrived 'by tin' itnknia to-dav. will make Auckland uv: headquarters, and after he lias completed the necessary ollieo and oilier arrangements, ho will make a icmr oi the Dominion in pursuance nt' his mis- > sioii. . , ~ , , In til." course of :'i talk with a Heralu reporter, .Mr Heddoe stated that ho regarded the prospects of trade between Canada and Now Zealand ay very promising. The. lact that there was already reciprocity be.iwoen the two Dominions in regard to proportional tariffs should, ho said, do much to foster an increase of trade. "Whilst,'' he said, "niv mission is to promote- trade from Canada to New Zealand, and not from New Zealand to Canada, 1 appreciate that the bringing about of direct return freights each way between the two Dominions is mutually desirable. Though it is not my special dill v to find an outlet for Now Zealand goods. I shall always be glad to give any information to New Zealand manufacturers and. shippers tliat'may assist them in finding Canadian markeis for Ihe warm. Incidentally, therefore, my mission may be of considerable advantage to New Zealand. Canada, which contains one of the largest leather tanneries in the world, can. for instance, take a great quantity of raw hides and also a greatdeal of'wool, gum, frozen mutton, and other products.'' In reply to a question concerning the' Vancouver service, Mr Beddoe ..aid that as this matter was at present in a ma liner sub judicc pending the receipt of the tenders for alternative services, lie was not prepared to express any but a general opinion. "The present mail communications between Canada and New Zealand certainly .do not appear to be very satisfactory," he said, "and whilst 1 do not care to express any opinion regarding the different routes, I believe it would be to the advantage of both Canada and New Zealand if there was direct mail and other communication to your country from both sides of our Dominion. The policy of the Lauricr Government is to promote trade wherever possible within the Env pile. Canada is going to bo a very great manufacturing country, and liesupplies of raw material are practically inexhaustible. I look upon tne service that is now being inaugurated as a very good example of Canada's policy of Imperial trade expansion."
