A public meeting this evening carried the following resolution: That in the opinion of this meeting the spirit of gambling, with its attendant evils,' is so prevalent throughout the Dominion that it calls for legislative restrictions, and with that object in view the meeting strongly urges upon the Government the necessity of altering the present Act in the direction of repealing the provisions made for licensing bookmakers. Wellington, July 12. The Wellington Presbytery to-day passed a resolution condemning the licensing of bookmakers, and decided to be represented on Monday's deputation. Wellington, July 12. At a meeting of the Committee of the Anti-Gambling League reports of the agitations in support of the Lieague's deputation were received. Auckland announced its readiness to send a special contingent of business men. Christchurch. sent a resolution 'carried at a public meeting and nominated members. Organisation in twenty other centres was reported to bo well forward. Local interest was manifested in the various communications, and a record deputation is expected. The deputation is to be received by Sir Joseph Ward on Monday next.' It was agreed to urge, in addition to the repeal of the licensing clause in the Gaming Act, the strengthening of the powers of the police regarding street betting, so that the elimination of the bookmaker may bo complete. i
