FLOODS.
(Per Press Association-.) Christchurch, July 13. Heavv rain is reported from all the northern districts. At Cheviot five inches have been recorded in two days. There is a wash-out on the railway a miles beyond Domett, where the Public Works Department's engine meets i train from the south. The new works on the railway extension are reported to have been badly damaged. Kaikoura reports the heaviest rain tor years. There has been an incessant" downpour since midday on Monday. All creeks and rivers are ovcrao'\ing and the country around town is under water. Last night a creek running through Kaikoura town, backed up bv the rising tide, poured over its banks, flooding houses and shops in the west end of the town. People were out of their beds all night. Extensive damage has been done. Coach communication with the south is wt likelv to be resumed for two or three davs. The low-lying parts of North Canterbury are all under water. The railwav protective works at the bridge over the Ashley River are said to be in danger. The wind, which was westerlv, changed to the south-east in the night, and there are no signs of the weather clearing.
