GLENAVY NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The Weather. —In common with other places we have been having a period of unsettled but seasonable weather. At the time of writing it is raining- heavily, and it is to be hoped it will continue, as the subsoil is not yet soaked. Fortunately the farmers were able to get large areas of wheatsown prior to the break in the weather. Social and Presentation.—Notwithstanding the, heavy gale and rain on Thursday evening, a large number of ladies and gentlemen met together :'n the school for the purpose of spending an evening with ?>lr and Mrs J. J. Ardagh and family, prior to their leaving for Oaniaru. Mr A. H. 11'Neil, ..f liedcliff, occupied the chair, and expressed his pleasure at seeing so many present, some of whom had come a long distance, and in presenting Mr and Mrs Ardagh with two handsome saddle-, cloth and velvet easy chairs, stated that during their residence at Glenavy Mr and Mrs Arifagh had made many friends, for. whether a person was rich or poor, they were always ready to help hini. and many a cup of tea hud been provided to those who had to drive a distance, and it was the wish of all that they may bo spared to en,joy many years of comfort. Mr James Hogg then presented a handsome clock to Miss Ardagh on the eve of her marriage and endorsed all that hud been said about her parents, and referred to the many acts of kindness on the part of Miss Ardagh and her willingness at all times to assist in local social gatherings. Other speakers referred to the excellent manner in which Mr Ardagh had conducted the hotel. No inducement had been made to encourage heavy drinking or undesirables to stay about the place. In responding, Mr Ardagh thanked the friends for the handsome presents, also for attending in snch large numbers. He would always be interested in the district, and any act of kindness had been done for its own sake. After an excellent supper the room was cleared for a short time to be spent in social intercourse and dancing. During the evening musical and vocal items were rendered by Mrs Blair, the Misses Ardagh (2), Hilliard, and Tansey, and Messrs H.vland and M'Neil. Personal and General. —I understand that the Tawai School Committee have selected Mr A. M'Murtrie, of Kaitangata for the position of headmaster. Mr MTnerney recently disposed of his fine house and lease, at a satisfactory figure to Mr Marshall, of Gore, .who jestalilishing a utility poultry farm. T observe that he lia.s some splendid types of White Leghorns and Minorca fowls. Constable Hilliard l , who some time .ago sprained his ankle, has resumed duty. An Unavailing Search. —Although frequent and diligent search has been made for the liody of young Byers, who was drowned l m the Waitaki oit June 3rd, no trace has been found. Great praise is duo to the settlers, who not only made the search, but lent horses and boats for th£ purpose. Constables M'Clinchv and Baird, of Waintate, also did 1 excellent service. Social. —On Friday evening a large number of people visited Waitaki on the occasion of the.-bachelors' ball, a very peasant evening being spent.
