RACE RIOTS FEARED
[By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.]
(Per Press Association.)
Received June 22, at 11.50 a.m. Seattle, June 22. - San Francisco reports that the Jeff-ries-Johnson fight will be held on the afternoon of July 4 at Reno, Nevada. The event is absolvitely certain, and the arena, seating 25,000, will be built immediately. Jeffries broke camp on Tuesday, and came to San Francisco. He will depart for Reno on Wednesday. Johnson will leave on Thursday. Both are in perfect condition. < Fruitless pressure was brought against Governor Dickerson, of Nevada, to stop the fight. . Dickerson says the battle is lawful and honest. Rickards is his personal friend.
Reno is on the principal railroad, ten hours from San Francisco, but cheap excursions have been planned and enormous crowds are expected, so that the receipts are likely not to be decreased by the removal. Both fighters will make a change of training methods, and there will be more boxing and less running. Reno is in a dusty desert, and is unfavorable for running practice. There is a general feeling of relief among sportsmen where heretofore there has been uncertainty. The Langford-Ketchell fight will take place at Reno on the morning of July 4th. Bloodshed is feared if Johnson wins, for race feeling is strong and where 15,000 inhabitants and 30,000 visitors are expected there can be no possibility of controlling the mob if rioting begins. Received June 22, at 9.40 a.m. London, June 21. Sporting Life's correspondent says that the betting at Chicago is 10,000 dollars against 6000 in favor of Jeffries, taken.
