BOXING.

HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP.

Writing of the meeting of C. Herbert (of Oamaru) and Picton the Lyttelton, Times says:—The professional contest for the" heavy weight championship provided a very interesting match. Picton, the holder of the championship, was over a stone and a-lialf heavier than Herbert, the challenger, but Herbert more than made up for his lack of weight by his quickness in leading and the soundness of his defence. Ho led constantly throughout the first thirteen rounds, and scored consistently both in leading and countering, though he frequently had to resort to clinching to avoid the formidable blows which Picton showered upon him. In the sixth round Picton caught bis opponent napping, and had all the best of a long rally, but otherwise, save ill the last two rounds, the points were all in favor of Herbert. In the fourteenth round Herbert was visibly fatigued, and did little more than counter and clinch, while in the last round lie was almost solely oil the defensive. The judges' decision that the match was a draw seemed to meet with general approbation. Mr R. Cooke was referee, and Messrs H. E. Marsh and W. J. Moir were the judges. OAMAEU BOXING ASSOCIATION. The Committee of the Oamaru Boxing Association have arranged a most attractive programme for their meeting on the 24th and 2oth inst., including

three six-round matches. For these the men have been carefully selected and judiciously matched. It is seldom indeed that at the same tournament the public gets three matches, and these fixtures next week should prove a big draw. Breed, who has an unbroken record of wins, will meet Mont Ongley, a thoroughly scientific and well-built boxer, who has twice won in the interuniver.sity tournament against his Canterbury College opponent. Armstrong is matched with Stewart, a pretty little fighter with good ring experience, while Armstrong caught the eye of the cognoscenti at the Dunedin meeting last week. Matthcwson, who also came to light at that meeting, is to fight with T. Nightingale, who gives pro-, misc of much better things than he has yet shown. Besides, of course, there will be the novice heavyweight, middleweight, lightweight, and featherweight competitions.
