James Bryce, British Ambassador at Washington, and Sir Joseph Ward conferred at Montreal regarding Webster's claim against New Zealand. In an interview Sir Joseph Ward said New Zealand stood firm for an undivided Imperial navy, but was outvoted in the Conference. He added that New Zealand was a strong advocate of all-red steamship and eable'lines owned by the Governments. Received September 3, at 0.55 a.m. Sydney, September 2. The Challenger will .sail direct for Fiji on September 11th, and there Sir Joseph Ward will transfer to the gun-. j boat from the Maraina.
