In the House of Commons, on the motion of MrJAsquith, further consideration of the Education Bill was postponed till Friday, Mir Asquith remarked: that itwould be a- waste of time to proceed untila settlement was reached, as he hoped might be tfle ease. The Archbishop of Canterbury, addressing representatives of the Church Council" in the Church House, said he was not prepared to abandon hone of a settlement, eqen after Mr Runciman's last letter, though negotiations were never more dispirited than now. The-i Bishop of Salisbury moved an amendment that the Bill is unacceptable without serious alterations.. The amendment was lost by 187 to 216. Mr Cripps' motion was carried by 189 to 99, but was declared lost because it did not obtain a majority of the three orders, bishops, clergy, and laity.
