Australians began today. The weather was fine, and the wicket hard. The county team was as follows : Woods, Palairet, Martyn, Newton, Braund. Robson, Lewis, Montgomery; Poyritz, Richardson, and Thomas. Howell, Gregory, Hopkins, and Newland stood out o! the Australian team. Darling won the toss, and sent in Trumper and Armstrong to face the bowling of Braund and Thomas. After each batsman had narrowly escaped playing the ball on early in their innings, they opened out, and rims came quickly, 145 appearing as the result of an hour and a-half s play. Then Trumper gave Palairet an easy chance at extra mid-off. He' gave an admirable display o: all-round cricket, though his innings wat marked by less cutting than usual. At 7-; Trumper completed his 1000 rims for the season. Armstrong, who was 55 when Trumper retired, had obtained his score chiefly by excellent driving.
