Adelaide, September 15. In the Ramsay Smith inquiry, Sir Josiah Symon, in a slashing address for the defence, declared that the charge against Dr Smith, was the outcome of malice and spite. The real cliarge was that two persons wanted to get rid of him by hook or by crook. After jiaying a tribute to Dr Smith, his eminence and efficiency as a medical man, and the esteem in which he was held by the -Government, counsel said it was under the direction of the Attorney-General he removed the skulls and heads and took human specimens, and fired rifles into dead bodies in order to give evidence as a Government medical expert. In other similar ways he had qualified himself for the duties the Government had imposed upon him. What Dr Smith had done had been done with absolute openness in the interests of the Government, his employers, anel in the interests of science. He charged the Government with t-lie basest ingratitude against Dr Smith. Received September 15, at 11.54 p.m. .Sydney, September 15. Arrived—Suffolk, from Wellington. The Runic to-morrow ships 10,000 carcases of frozen mutton, the first of a consignment of 38,C00 which Mr Arthur Kidman has arranged to despatch to England during the next month. After inspection by Mr 'Copeland, Minister of Agriculture, and others interested" in the export trade, including a number of New Zealanders, Mr Ividman said his experience of London showed that as regards quality and dressing New Zealand mutton was the best. He believed, given the same favorable conditions as obtained in New Zealand, they could do just as well as the New Zealanders, if they paid the same attention to such details as dressing and general finish. He intended to show they could do equally well.
